| Project Overview | Lake Erling dam was constructed on Bodcau Creek in the mid 1950's by International Paper to supply water to a nearby papermill located in Springhill Louisiana. Lake Erling is currently regarded as the top bass fishing lake in Arkansas and one of the top crappie fishing lake in the USA. The eradication of Giant Salvinia (GS) would for sure benefit, improve access and the overall experience on the lake and its many waterways. There would be no mitigation of climate change on the lake as the chemicals being used are approved for aquatic use and endorsed by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC). | ||||||||||||||
| Project Methods | The application of the herbicides would be done by licensed contractors who are certified in the State of Arkansas. At this time it would be difficult to determine how many square-feet of shoreline would be treated as this invasive plant grows at such a rapid rate. The plant is also sensitive to extreme cold which can facilitate its eradication but further makes it difficult to quantify how much spraying will be needed. | ||||||||||||||
| Monitoring Plan | We are going to be monitoring the lake in cooperation with AGFC biologists. The goal while extremely difficult is to completely eradicate GS. | ||||||||||||||
| Outreach Plan | The AGRED Foundation will be contacting people in the local community to try and raise additional funding for the project as it is these communities that benefit from the access to Lake Erling. | ||||||||||||||
